Youth Gains Experience at Sooner Challenge
January 19, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN—The future of Oklahoma State track and field was on display Saturday at the Sooner Challenge, as LaKyron Mays and Cole Verble won their events.
Mays led a trio of Cowboys in the 600-yards. He won the race in 1:15.14. Teammates Ashton Hicks and Tanner Green finished within one second of Mays. Hicks finished as the runner-up in 1:15.67 and Green came in fourth place with a time of 1:16.14.
Cole Verble won the men's pole vault. He cleared the bar at 4.40 meters. He was tied with Oklahoma's Lucas Kelley, but won a jump off to come away as the victor.
Bailey Golden also impressed. In the women's high jump, she jumped over 1.70 meters, barely missing out on a season high. The freshman also competed in the shot put.
In the women's 600-yards, the Cowgirls claimed five of the top-six spots. Latriceia Smtih, Nicolette Dixon, Amira Coleman, Sarah Horan and Michaela Travers finished second through sixth.
"It was a good tune up for the multi eventers as they prepare for their first heptathlon and pentathlon next weekend at Arkansas," said assistant coach Josh Langley.
Langley said he was impressed with performances from Megan Mann and Makenna Parker in the 60-meter hurdles. He also mentioned he was excited about Jake Dyer's shot put efforts. Dyer threw the shot 14.33 meters, which is a good mark for a decathlete.
"It was a good meet to get our younger athletes more meet experience," Langley said. "At this stage of the season, you're learning to compete more than looking for a season or personal best. As I say that, we certain saw some good things this weekend and some encouraging marks."
