Steven Schmidt breaks Decathlon and Javelin program records on second day of Big 12 Championships
May 16, 2026 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
TUCSON, Ariz. – Oklahoma State men's and women's outdoor track & field capped off the second day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships Friday in Tucson, Ariz., fronted by numerous program records falling in the multi events.
After leading the men's Decathlon through day one, senior Steven Schmidt capped off his Big 12 Championships career with a third-place score of 7,729 points, passing the previous school record of 7,450 points set by Philip Frank at the 2023 Big 12 Championships. Schmidt gained a personal best in seven of ten events, including breaking the Javelin program record with a throw of 60.21 meters, a mark previously held by Max Braht with a 58.61-meter throw at the 2021 Sooner Invitational.
Teammate Cooper Moore placed his name in the program books with 7,558 points and a fourth-place finish to give the Cowboys 11 team points in the Decathlon. His 7,558 points were enough to put him second in program behind Schmidt. The sophomore picked up three personal bests on the way, including a win in the Decathlon 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 14.10.
In the women's Heptathlon, senior Annie Molenhouse finished her Big 12 Championships career with an incredible performance, breaking her own program record of 6,005 points on her way to a second-place finish in the event. Molenhouse is the first Cowgirl to break 6,000 points in the Hep and is the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this season, but came up just short in her bid to defend her Big 12 title.
The point total breaks the previous record of 5,887 points set by Bailey Golden at the Jim Click Shootout in 2024. Molenhouse finished just 81 points behind first, finishing her meet with a win in the 800 Meters and her fourth All-Big 12 performance.
Junior Katie Chapman finished with a huge personal best of 5,586 points overall, which was good for sixth place on the day. Her mark places her fourth in program history and gives Chapman a second All-Big 12 showing in as many years as the Cowgirls also gained 11 points in the multi.
In the field events, Michael Lunsford finished the men's Shot Put with a fifth-place finish and a throw of 17.68 meters, earning his first All-Big 12 honor in a Cowboy uniform. True freshman Kevin Kemboi followed suit in the men's Long Jump, finishing with a leap of 7.69 meters and a fourth-place finish. The phenom will look to add a second All-Big 12 honor in the Triple Jump Saturday, where he broke the program record with a jump of 16.34 meters at the Florida Relays earlier this season.
On the track, Kaylie Politza clocked a season best 2:02.47 in the women's 800 Meter prelims, giving her the fourth fastest qualifying time and putting her into Saturday's final. The senior will look to add her third All-Big 12 performance after reaching the award in 2023 and 2025.
Teammate and true freshman Brooke Beck ran to a massive personal best in the prelims with her time of 2:03.74 and will be joining Politza in Saturday's final.
In the men's 800 Meter prelims, Hafez Mahadi continued his dominance, advancing as the fastest time qualifier and winning his heat with his mark of 1:46.94. Mahadi will be looking to pick up his first Big 12 title in this breakout season after breaking the program record just last week at the Arkansas Twilight.
In the 400 Meter prelims, sophomore Mason Page qualified for Saturday's final with a time of 45.92, just one tenth off of his personal best set at the Florida Relays and more than a second faster than the time he ran at the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Charlie Thorne and Will Bynum crossed the line tied at 46.10, giving them the fifth fastest time in program history, respectively.
In the lone track finals of the day, Laban Kipkemboi picked up his first All-Big 12 honor of the weekend with a seventh-place finish and a time of 8:44.02 in the men's 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. This is the first year Kipkemboi has participated in the steeplechase event after competing in the 1,500 Meters for much of his college career outdoors. He will look to add a second All-Big 12 in the 1,500 Meters tomorrow night after advancing as the fastest time qualifier.
On the women's side in the Steeplechase, senior Madi Surber picked up All-Big 12 honors in her first season competing in the event with her time of 10:18.71, which was good for sixth place overall as the Cowgirls finished the day tied for third in the team standings through eight events.
The Cowboys sit in seventh with 13 of 21 events still to be scored on Saturday.
Both teams return to action Saturday for the final day of the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships tomorrow at 5 p.m. CT. The entirety of the meet is streamed live on ESPN+, with live results found here.
