Big 12 Coaches Project Cowgirls to Finish Fourth in 2019
January 10, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team was selected to finish fourth in the Big 12 conference for the third-straight year in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, it was announced Thursday morning.
OSU received 23 points to land three points outside the top three, as Oklahoma (36), Texas (29) and Baylor (26) edged out the Pokes. Thursday's ranking is tied for the Cowgirls' highest preseason placement since the poll was introduced in 2000 and marked the fourth time that OSU has been selected to finish fourth by the league's coaches.
Last year, Oklahoma State stormed its way to a second-place finish in the Big 12 - the program's highest finish in the league since 2003. The Cowgirls' 12-6 conference campaign in 2018 included OSU's first three-game sweep of Baylor and the program's first series victory in Austin, as the Pokes took two of three from the Longhorns on the Forty Acres.
The 2018 squad posted a 39-22 overall record during head coach Kenny Gajewski's third season at the helm and also made its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. OSU posted four wins over ranked opponents last season, including a 9-4 victory over No. 7 Arizona on opening day.
Several key members of the 2018 team return to Stillwater this year, such as seniors Rylee Bayless, Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery. The Cowgirls will also welcome back sophomore captain Sydney Pennington, as well as a host of talented newcomers, which includes a trio of SEC transfers, highlighted by former Texas A&M two-way standout Samantha Show.
The first pitch of the 2019 season is just over four weeks away, with the Cowgirls set to face Illinois and Houston on the opening day of the Houston Invitational, Friday, Feb. 8, in Houston, Texas.
