STILLWATER – Two teams with long winning streaks could not decide a winner in 110 minutes Friday night at Neal Patterson Stadium as 12th-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 6 Texas battled to a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
The Cowgirls, who entered the match on a seven-game winning streak, are now 10-1-1 on the season and off to a 2-0-1 start in Big 12 Conference play. OSU is unbeaten this season at home with a 5-0-1 mark.
Texas rode an eight-game winning streak into Stillwater, and the Longhorns remained unbeaten on the season at 9-0-2 and 1-0-1 in league play.
Neither team could create much offensively in the opening half as the two combined for just seven shots, five of those by Texas. But the Cowgirls would take a lead into halftime following a score in the 23rd minute.
After Claire Gantzer delivered a ball deep into the box, several players leapt in traffic and UT defender Atu Mshana's header attempt to clear the ball instead sent it into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 OSU lead.
Both teams would create more opportunities in the second half, and one of those nearly resulted in a 2-0 lead for the Cowgirls in the 60th minute when Marlo Zoller blasted a left-footed shot from the top of the box that deflected off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
UT recorded the equalizer in the 77th minute as the Big 12's top goal scorer, Cyera Hintzen, chipped a 20-yard shot to the far post over charging OSU goalie Dani Greenlee.
The Cowgirls posted the only three shots over the final 12 minutes of regulation, but attempts by Haley Woodard, Grace Yochum and Camy Huddleston all went wide of the mark.
OSU nearly took a 2-1 advantage with just over one minute remaining in regulation when Ally Jackson collected a mishandled ball by UT goalie Nicole Curry and delivered it into the net. But a foul was whistled on the Cowgirls for making contact with Curry, and the potential game winner was negated.
The Longhorns outshot OSU by a 6-3 margin in the overtime periods and held an 18-14 edge in the match; Texas also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls travel to Norman to take on Bedlam-rival Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU.
