Cowboys Preview Texas Tech
September 18, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Select members of the Oklahoma State football team met with members of the media Tuesday after practice to discuss the Cowboys' Big 12 opener against Texas Tech. Here's a look at some of their comments:
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On the benefits of being in his fifth year within the Cowboys' scheme:
"There is a comfort level for me as far as knowing the offense. It hasn't changed a lot – the base of it is all still the same with Coach (Mike) Yurcich still here. There's just a comfort level."
On if he is comfortable with rushing the ball often:
"Absolutely, if that's what our coaches want me to do."
On if he enjoys running the football:
"(Contact) doesn't bother me. I'm just happy for the opportunity to run."
Defensive End Jarrell Owens
On continuing to pressure opposing quarterbacks:
"We just have to continue to execute in practice and play hard together as a group."
On he and Jordan Brailford combining for four sacks against Boise State:
"I feel like we had a pretty decent game, but that game is in the past. We have to continue to get better because I feel like we can continue to excel pass rush if we keep working together."
On the biggest challenge Texas Tech presents:
"Definitely their tempo. For us, we have to just continue to practice at a high-tempo pace to make sure we're ready for Saturday."
Wide Receiver Tyron Johnson
On the passing game:
"It's going good. I feel like every week it's improving. (Taylor) Cornelius is getting in a good rhythm."
On the passing game against Boise State after a slow start:
"We knew it was a big game so we had to pick it up. The defense did a great job and special teams did an awesome job. That just gave us an extra boost to be better."
On the depth at the wide receiver position:
"We feel great with all of our guys making plays. The ball could go anywhere. That's the way we practice. We practice making plays and transferring that to the game. I think we will be as dangerous as last year with the first four guys and with the guys coming up behind us."
Linebacker Calvin Bundage
On Alan Bowman:
"I've seen him put up a lot of points. I think it's going to be an interesting game."
On Texas Tech's offensive style
"Texas Tech brings a no-huddle. Boise State had a huddle at times, you kind of see the formation (before the play). Texas Tech doesn't have a huddle and they go fast and that's the type of game they want to play. We know what they are going to do, I think we will be ready for them."
Wide receiver Tylan Wallace
On which of his skillsets is the strongest:
"My ball skills probably. I feel like last year, Coach (Kasey) Dunn helped me become more consistent catching the ball."
On his connection with Cornelius:
"Being at the two-spot last year working with (Taylor Cornelius) helped out a lot. Being able to start with him this year - it feels normal because we have been doing it for so long."
Defensive End Jordan Brailford
On preparing for Texas Tech:
"They like to move the ball fast, get a lot of plays in, it's going to be well over 100 plays. We've just got to get used to it during the week, just going fast getting ready for the tempo."
On subbing less this week than last week:
"We are definitely going to have to stay out there longer. Definitely going to have to key into when they sub and get a sub in ourselves. Other than that we are going to be out there for a while."
On stopping the run:
That's what we try to do every week, is stopping the run. We want to make them one-sided in everything they do and get after the quarterback."
