ANADARKO, Okla. – The 2018 American Indian Exposition honored Oklahoma State basketball player Lindy Waters with their Indian of the Year award on Saturday night.
The American Indian Exposition is one of the oldest and largest intertribal gatherings in the United States. The celebration dates back to 1924 and includes representatives from nearly 50 native tribes each year. The expo is a showcase for native dance competitions, tribal exhibitions, parades, arts and crafts, and culture.
Waters, who celebrates his Kiowa/Cherokee heritage, was presented the award after four days of festivities at the Caddo County Fairground in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Waters was the grand marshal in multiple parades and was the guest of honor at the event's culminating pow wow on Saturday night. He wore a handmade shirt and moccasins with the OSU brand, and was greeted with native gifts during the ceremony.
Past Indian of the Year award winners include Willie Nelson, Roy Rogers and Crystal Gayle.
For the last two seasons, Waters has helped honor the rich native culture of Oklahoma by being the face of Cowboy basketball's month-long N7 celebration during Native American Heritage month in November. He has also been a guest speaker for several native youth groups and has hosted basketball camps throughout the state.
On the court, Waters earned 31 starts and upped his averages as a sophomore to 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He posted 15 double-digit scoring games, hit the game-winning 3-pointer at No. 7 West Virginia and scored a career-high 18 points in OSU's upset over No. 6 Texas Tech. Noted for his defense, Waters posted a team-high 17 charges.
Waters and his Cowboy teammates open the 2018-19 season at Charlotte on Nov. 10. Season tickets start at just $150 and are available at okstate.com/tickets or by calling 877-ALL-4-OSU.
