Shippy Honored as Big 12 Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 announced its Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners Thursday, and Oklahoma State's Vanessa Shippy was honored as the softball recipient for the second-consecutive year. Shippy is the first Big 12 softball player to receive the distinction more than once since the award was established during the 2012-13 academic year.
The Big 12 Conference names a recipient of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
Shippy, the 2018 Big 12 Player of the Year, excelled on the field this season as she led the Cowgirls with a .470 batting average, a .613 on-base percentage, 57 walks and 73 runs scored. Her on-base percentage and runs scored both established new OSU single-season records, surpassing the marks she set as a sophomore in 2016. Shippy also notched 81 hits in 2018 - the second most in team history - and was named an All-American for the third-straight season, collecting first-team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
She is one of only two OSU softball players to be named an All-American on three occasions and joins three-time All-American Jaime Foutch (1996-99) in that exclusive Cowgirl club.
Off the field, Shippy was recognized for her outstanding effort in the classroom as she was named a Google Cloud Academic All-American and an Academic All-Big 12 first team selection for the third-consecutive year. Shippy is the third OSU student-athlete, regardless of sport, to be named an Academic All-American three times.
The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native joins OSU football's Tom Wolf (1972-74) and former men's track and cross country standout Ryan Vail (2008-10) in that group. Shippy and Vail are also the only Oklahoma State student-athletes to earn both All-America and Academic All-America honors on at least three occasions.
Shippy recently graduated from Oklahoma State with degrees in marketing and finance, as well as a minor in accounting. She posted a 3.895 grade-point average and was one of five Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees to record 100 percent participation in 2018.
