OKLAHOMA CITY – Two-time Oklahoma State softball All-American Vanessa Shippy was named one of 10 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Shippy was recently named the 2018 Big 12 Player of the Year, marking the second time in her illustrious career that she has received that honor. She joins Oklahoma's Amber Flores (2009, 2010) and Shelby Pendley (2013, 2015) as the only Big 12 players to be named the league's top player on multiple occasions.
The left-handed hitter is currently the Big 12's leader in on-base percentage (.613), runs scored (65) and walks (54). Her .460 batting average is also just one point shy of tying for the lead among Big 12 competitors, and all four of those marks place her among the top 10 competitors nationally.
Shippy currently owns no fewer than eight school records. So far this season, she has surpassed her own OSU single-season runs record, set a new career walks record for the program and is on track to surpass several others.
She can realistically add four more career records to her resume in postseason play, as she needs just one double to tie the OSU and Big 12 records. Shippy also needs to start just four more games to set new Oklahoma State records for most games played, most games started and most consecutive games started.
Shippy is one of only five players in Big 12 history to record at least 225 hits, 150 walks, 150 runs scored and 125 RBI. She is the only Cowgirl to ever reach those numbers and is the first Big 12 player to do so since Oklahoma's Lauren Chamberlain did in 2015.
The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native has twice been named national player of the week in 2018 and on three occasions she has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
