Babic and Blanco Advance to Doubles Round of 16 at NCAA Championships
May 24, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis duo of senior Vladica Babic and junior Sofia Blanco advanced to the doubles round of 16 on Thursday, defeating No. 17 Anna Danilina and Victoria Emma of Florida in the first round.
Â
Babic and Blanco find themselves a win away from becoming the first OSU All-American doubles tandem since 1991. They will take on No. 8 Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirezon of Syracuse on Friday.
Â
The Cowgirl tandem got off to a bit of a slow start on Thursday, coming up on the losing end of a 6-4 first set; however, Babic and Blanco would bounce back, leading most of the following frame to pull out a 6-4 win of their own in the second set and force a third.
Â
The third set was decided using a super tiebreaker in place of a traditional set. After going back and forth for much of the tiebreaker, Babic and Blanco fought back from a 6-4 deficit by winning six of the next eight points to lock up the match.
Â
The victory marked the Cowgirls' 28th win of the season and 13th over a ranked opponent. It also vaulted them into a tie for 10th on the program list for most doubles wins in a season in the Big 12 era.
Â
Thursday saw the collegiate career of Cowgirl senior Megan McCray come to a close with a tough loss to No. 3 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. McCray battled and hung in the entirety of the match, but came up short, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Â
McCray finishes her outstanding senior season at 18-3 and wraps up her career at 41-16. Her season win percentage will rank seventh all-time and third in the Big 12 era for highest singles season win percentage for a Cowgirl at .857. Her career win percentage of .719 will stand at fourth in the Big 12 era.
