May 23, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – Oklahoma State women's tennis senior Megan McCray advanced into the round of 32 of the singles draw at the NCAA Women's Tennis Individual Championships on Wednesday afternoon, defeating No. 36 Julia Rosenqvist of California in three sets.
Â
McCray will look to attain All-America status for the first time in her career on Thursday, when she'll match up with No. 3 Estela Perez-Somarriba for a spot in the round of 16. A start time will be announced Wednesday evening.
Â
The Cowgirl senior overcame a slow start to the match, unable to bounce back in the first set from falling down a break early and eventually dropping the frame, 6-4. McCray rebounded nicely in the second set and overwhelmed Thornqvist, 6-1, to force a third. In the final set, she took command early in jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Despite a couple of breaks from Rosenqvist early, McCray never looked back and finished off the 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
Â
With the win, McCray boosts her stellar record on the season to 18-2. She has now won five of her six matches against ranked foes.
Â
Cowgirl senior Vladica Babic came up short to No. 6 Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss in her first round matchup, battling but dropping a 7-5, 6-4 match. She ends her OSU singles career with 95 wins, which is good for the second most in the Big 12 era.
Â
Babic's week isn't done yet, however, as she will team up with junior Sofia Blanco to face Florida's Anna Danilina and Victoria Emma in the first round of doubles action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT. With a pair of wins the Cowgirl duo can become the first OSU doubles All-Americans since 1991.
