Trio of Cowgirls Take Aim at NCAA Individual Titles
May 22, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Three members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team will travel to Winston Salem, N.C. this week to compete at the NCAA Individual Championships. Action at the event is set for May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Â
Cowgirl seniors Vladica Babic and Megan McCray will compete in the singles draw while Babic will team up with junior Sofia Blanco in doubles.
Â
Babic will open in singles play against sixth-seeded Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss in the round of 64 on Wednesday at 7 a.m. CT. Hartono took the only other meeting between the two last January in Stillwater. Now 26-6 overall this season and ranked 20th in the country, the Cowgirl is looking for her first career All-America honor.
Â
McCray will face No. 36 Julia Rosenqvist of California in the first round on Wednesday at noon CT on Wednesday, and will also be gunning for the first All-America recognition of her career. Since returning to OSU this spring, the Oceanside, Calif., native is an impressive 17-2 overall and 4-1 against ranked opponents.
Â
In doubles, Babic and Blanco will take on Florida's Anna Danilina and Victoria Emma, who are currently ranked No. 17 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Cowgirl tandem is 27-8 so far this season, including 12 ranked wins. Doubles play will open on Thursday with times to be announced later on.
Â
All three Pokes will look to add their names to OSU tennis lore by attaining All-America status or winning an NCAA Championship. Both Babic and McCray can secure All-America status by advancing two rounds into the singles round of 16. On the doubles side, Babic and Blanco need a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals.
Â
In singles, head coach Chris Young hopes to add Babic and McCray to the growing list of All-Americans under his watch. Viktoriya Lushkova became the first Cowgirl in program history to be named a singles All-American with recognition in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Katarina Adamovic electrified orange-heavy crowds at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., in 2016 when she advanced to the singles quarterfinals in 2016.
Â
With a pair of wins this week, Babic and Blanco can become the first Cowgirl All-American doubles tandem since Caroline Delisle and Sally Godman earned the honor in 1991.
