Fix Sweeps World Team Trials Challenge Tournament to Advance to Final X
May 20, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Oklahoma State wrestler freshman Daton Fix swept through the USA Wrestling Senior Freestyle World Team Trials challenge tournament this weekend to advance to the final stage of World team qualifying at 57kg.
Â
The Cowboy freshman will move on to Final X to take on 2017 World silver medalist Thomas Gilman for a spot on the 2018 World team. The two will battle it out on June 9 in Lincoln, Neb.
If Fix were to knock off Gilman, it would mark the third World team the Cowboy has qualified for in the last year. He took gold at the Junior Freestyle World Championships last summer, helping Team USA to a team title as well. Last fall, he competed for the United States' U23 World team.
Â
Fix went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, opening with a 14-2 technical fall in 2:07 over former Cowboy Eddie Klimara, followed by a 9-2 victory over Zane Richards and a 10-0 technical fall over four-time NCAA All-American Zach Sanders.
Â
Those three wins set Fix up for a U.S. Open finals rematch with two-time World team member Tony Ramos in a best-of-three series. At the U.S. Open, Ramos escaped with the win on criteria; however, it was all Fix on Sunday, as the Sand Springs native only needed two matches to dispatch of Ramos in the finals.
Â
After leading throughout the majority of the first match of the day, Fix was able to fight off a late Ramos attack and counter for the takedown with 10 seconds to go to finish off the 4-1 win.
Â
Fix dominated the second match, using an inside trip and gut wrench into a turn to take a commanding, 7-0 lead at the end of the first period. Ramos was able to get on the board in the second, but the Cowboy put the 10-3 victory on ice with another takedown in the closing seconds of the match.
Â
Former Cowboy Alex Dieringer advanced to the finals at 79kg as well, but was bested in two matches by Zahid Valencia. Austin Schafer earned an automatic bye to the 97kg finals after his U.S. Open win last month, but was forced to withdraw due to injury after dropping his first match against Kyven Gadson.
