2018 Cowgirls Mirroring Miracle 2011 Campaign
May 15, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The 2018 Oklahoma State softball season has been one of firsts. Some of those firsts have been things the program has never seen before, but many have been achievements not seen by the program since a magical 2011 season in which the Cowgirls made the program's seventh appearance in the Women's College World Series.
This year's clan of Cowgirls had mirrored that 2011 group in many ways. And that's not to say that this year's group is lock to make the same incredible postseason run that the 2011 squad did, but instead it serves as evidence of how quickly the program has returned to national prominence under third-year head coach Kenny Gajewski. A look at some of the feats that this year's Cowgirls have achieved for the first time since 2011 and other ways in which this year has mirrored its predecessor:
- Ranked in at least one of the national preseason polls.
- Opened the season in Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic.
- Earned a top-15 ranking at least once during the season.
- Began the year with an 8-2 record through 10 games.
- Reached the 20-win mark in 26 games - the fastest the team has hit that mark since doing it in 25 games in 2011.
- Had three players on the active roster that logged at least 100 career RBI.
- Swept Big 12-rival Baylor
- Won 30 games for the third-straight year.
- Won 36 games during the regular season - their most since winning 37 in 2011.
- Had standouts hailing from Burleson, Texas - LHP Sarah Odom in 2011, INF Madi Sue Montgomery in 2018.
- Making the team's third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The 2011 OSU softball squad's NCAA Tournament was the third-consecutive appearance for the Cowgirls. As previously mentioned, that run was capped by an appearance in the Women's College World Series. This year's group of Cowgirls is ready for their shot at history.
For a program that for so long lived among the elite of college softball, these achievements mark important steps in the program's return to the top. It is physical proof of how far the program has come in its three seasons under Gajewski and shows that the Cowgirls are not that far off from reclaiming their place at the top of the mountain.
Oklahoma State will get its first crack at continuing to match the 2011 squad in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional this weekend. The Cowgirls will open against Wichita State Friday at 1:30 p.m. CT before awaiting either DePaul or the No. 13-seeded Arkansas Razorbacks.
