Cowgirl Softball Selected to Fayetteville Regional
May 13, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – For the third-straight season, the Oklahoma State softball squad will compete in the NCAA Tournament, it was announced Sunday night. The Cowgirls will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for regional action to compete against the No. 13-seeded Razorbacks, as well as Wichita State and Depaul.
This year's selection marks the Cowgirls' 21st all-time postseason appearance and the first time that OSU has competed in three-straight NCAA Tournament since a three-year run from 2009-11. The 2011 Cowgirls capped that stretch of tournament play by advancing to the Women's College World Series for the seventh time in program history.
OSU head coach Kenny Gajewski is the first coach in program history to lead the Cowgirls to the NCAA Tournament in each of his (or her) first three seasons in charge.
"I'm just excited about our team and everything that they've done to be a two-seed," Gajewski said. "This time of year, none of these things are easy. All of these teams are very good and we're familiar with these teams. We've played all of them in my three years here. This year we've played Wichita State twice, played Arkansas in the fall and watched them play a lot, and we played Depaul in my first year.
"I'm excited for our fans, too. They get a chance to be able to go and watch and it's a big deal to be this close to home."
OSU will compete as the No. 2 seed in the Fayetteville regional, and is set to matchup with third-seeded Wichita State on Friday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPNU.
Arkansas and Depaul will clash at 4 p.m. CT on Friday.
Oklahoma State has racked up 38 wins so far this season - matching last season's win total - and is coming off the program's first second-place finish in the Big 12 Conference since 2001. Gajewski's squad has won 12 league games in each of the past two seasons, marking the first time that OSU has won double-digit games in conference since the Big 12's inaugural seasons in 1996 and 1997.
