WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State had its streak of Big 12 Conference series wins snapped Sunday as the 14th-ranked Cowboys dropped the rubber game, 7-3, at Baylor Ballpark.
The loss ended OSU's streak of five consecutive conference series wins, which dated back to its league opening weekend at Texas on March 23-25, as the Cowboys fell to 29-19-1 on the season. The Pokes are 16-5 in Big 12 play and remain atop the standings ahead of second-place Texas (14-7) going into the final week of the regular season.
Jonathan Heasley took the loss on the mound as the sophomore fell to 3-5 on the year. In 5 2/3 innings, the right-hander allowed four runs, only two of them earned, on eight hits while issuing a pair of walks and striking out four.
Offensively, OSU scored all of its runs on solo homers as the Cowboys got back-to-back blasts from Matt Kroon and Colin Simpson in the eighth inning and a two-out shot by Carson McCusker in the ninth. The Cowboys were held hitless over the first four innings by BU starter Tyler Thomas before a leadoff single by Michael Neustifter in the fifth.
BU (30-18, 11-10) took a lead in its first at bat, getting a pair of hits against Heasley, including a two-RBI single from Andy Thomas to go up 2-0.
The Bears doubled their lead with two unearned runs in the fourth. Heasley struck out the leadoff batter in the inning, but a throwing error by Simpson on the third strike allowed the runner to reach safely and take second base. Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt to move two runners into scoring position, BU plated runs on a groundout and single to extend its lead to 4-0.
Baylor's finals run came in the seventh. Davis Wendzel led off the inning with a double off Brady Basso and later came around to score on a wild pitch before a two-out, two-run home run by Cole Haring pushed the score to 7-0.
Sunday's game also marked the 2018 season debut on the mound of Jensen Elliott, who worked a perfect eighth inning. Elliott, who was a Freshman All-American in 2016 and has 12 wins in 21 career starts, is coming back from undergoing Tommy John surgery last April.
OSU concludes the regular season this week with its final Big 12 series when the Cowboys host Texas Tech, with the opener set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
