STILLWATER – Oklahoma State came up short in its series opener against 10th-ranked Texas Tech Thursday night as the Red Raiders handed the 14th-ranked Cowboys a 9-4 loss at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 29-20-1 and are now 16-6 in Big 12 Conference play; OSU remains atop the Big 12 standings, one game ahead of Texas (15-7), who beat TCU in its series opener tonight.
TTU (36-15, 13-9) plated a pair of runs in the sixth before using a five-run seventh to take command. Ryan Shetter recorded the win to improve to 4-0 with sixth innings in relief.
Offensively, OSU managed just seven hits, with Jon Littell and Christian Funk each going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Peyton Battenfield took the loss on the mound in relief of starter Joe Lienhard as the sophomore right-hander gave up six runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings to fall to 2-2. Lienhard recorded five strikeouts and allowed only one run in five innings of work.
The Cowboys got on the board first in the second inning when Funk scored from first base after TTU left fielder Grant Little dropped a fly ball off the bat of Carson McCusker to put OSU up 1-0.
In the top of the third, the Red Raiders responded when Gabe Holt's sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1.
TTU then proceeded to score seven unanswered runs as Shetter kept the OSU hitters in check.
The Red Raiders took a lead they would never surrender in the sixth when Michael Davis followed a two-out walk with a two-run homer to right field to make the score 3-1.
In the seventh, the Red Raiders benefitted from another Holt RBI as well as a bases-clearing triple by Cody Masters. TTU capped the five-run inning by scoring on a wild pitch to go up by an 8-1 count.
Littell provided OSU's final runs of the contest when he ripped a three-run home run over the left-field wall in the eighth. The homer was his seventh of the season and cut the TTU lead to 8-4.
The two teams return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
