WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State slugged seven home runs Saturday as the 14th-ranked Cowboys knocked off Baylor, 11-6, at Baylor Ballpark.
Trevor Boone tied an OSU program record with three homers against the Bears, while Colin Simpson added two round trippers. Matt Kroon and Michael Neustifter also homered.
The Cowboys' seven home runs were their most in a game since they had eight against Kansas in 2006; OSU had never had more than four in a game in six seasons under head coach Josh Holliday. The program record is 11, which came against Chicago State in 1999.
With the win, OSU improved to 29-18-1 and 16-4 in Big 12 Conference play and also snapped Baylor's nation's-best 13-game winning streak as the Bears fell to 29-18 and 10-10 in the league.
Boone finished 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. He homered in each of his first three at-bats, those coming in the second, third and fifth innings. The three home runs are something that has only been done 13 times previously in OSU history but not since Robbie Rea did it in 2012, and Boone became just the 12th different Cowboy to achieve the feat.
OSU's power surge helped Carson Teel record another win on the mound as the junior southpaw improved to 7-2 with a five-inning effort. Reza Aleaziz allowed just one run on two hits in three innings of relief, while Peyton Battenfield worked a perfect ninth to seal the win.
The Pokes jumped out to their first lead of the series in their first at bat. Following a Kroon single, Simpson stepped to the plate and crushed his 16th home run of the season over the right-field wall to put the Pokes up 2-0.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Bears answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, getting a two-out, two-RBI double from Shea Langeliers to tie the score.
The Cowboys quickly used the long ball to go back on top as Boone led off the second inning with a 415-foot bomb to left field, with his sixth homer of the season putting OSU up 3-2.
OSU's power surge continued in the third as they once again led off the inning with a homer, this one off the bat of Kroon, whose ninth round tripper gave the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
And the Pokes weren't done as four batters later, Boone blasted his second homer of the day, a two-run shot over the center field wall that put OSU on top by a 6-2 margin.
BU trimmed its deficit to three with a homer in the bottom of the third, but once again the Cowboys answered as for the third consecutive inning, they delivered a leadoff home run. This time it was Neustifter with his fourth of the year to put OSU up 7-2.
The Cowboys added three more runs on, you guessed it, another home run later in the fourth as Simpson drove a pitch over the wall in left-center field. Simpson finished with five RBIs, which tied his career high.
OSU's final run of the contest came when Boone led off the fifth with a home run, which marked the fourth-straight inning that the Cowboys blasted a leadoff homer.
The two teams return to action for Sunday's rubber game at 1:05 p.m.
