Cowgirls Wrap Up Non-Conference Play
April 28, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 25/21 Oklahoma State softball team concluded the non-conference portion of its 2018 schedule Saturday, run-ruling South Dakota, 8-0, in five innings and falling to No. 1 UCLA, 7-0, at Easton Stadium.
In the opener, the Cowgirls (36-16; 12-3 Big 12) jumped on the board quickly with a two-run home run to right field from Madi Sue Montgomery. It was Montgomery's 13th home run of the year, tying her for the third most in a single season in OSU history. She is one shy of the team record set held by Courtney Totte (2007) and Kim Kaye (2008).
Her first-pitch blast scored Vanessa Shippy, who reached base with a leadoff single to center field to open the game. Shippy also helped cap off OSU's run-rule victory with a ball to left center that scored Michaela Richbourg in the bottom of the fifth to give OSU a 7-0 lead.
Taylor Lynch polished off the Cowgirls' eighth shutout of the year with a walk-off single to deep center field that scored Maddi Holcomb to end the contest. Lynch finished 2-for-4 at the plate in Saturday's opener and a pair of RBI.
Samantha Clakley returned to her dominant form in the circle against the Coyotes, allowing just four hits and striking out three in a complete-game shutout. Clakley did not issue a walk on Saturday, extending her streak to 25 consecutive appearances in which she has issued no more than two free passes.
In the nightcap, Oklahoma State again found itself trailing the nation's No. 1 team early, as the Cowgirls surrendered a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the first that opened the game's scoring. UCLA tacked on five more runs over the next six frames to best the Cowgirls, 7-0.
Emmie Robertson took the loss in the circle, falling to 12-5 on the year. Robertson allowed five earned runs in one-plus innings of work Saturday night. Logan Simunek relieved her and pitched the final five innings, striking out three and allowing just one run.
Vanessa Shippy was the only Cowgirl to reach base three times in the weekend finale, as she wore a 2-2 pitch from Rachel Garcia to lead off the game, blasted a leadoff double to right center in the fourth and walked in the sixth.
Shippy's hit-by-pitch extended her career-long streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 43. She has reached base in all but one of OSU's games this season. Her fourth-inning double was the 54th of her illustrious career, bringing her within two of tying the Oklahoma State and Big 12 records.
The road doesn't get any easier for the Cowgirls from here, as they will now turn their attention toward a Bedlam matchup with No. 3 Oklahoma on Wednesday. The first meeting between the two rivals will take place in Norman at 6:30 p.m.
OSU will host the Sooners at Cowgirl Stadium on Friday for game two of the three-game set, and then the squads will return to Norman on Saturday to wrap up the series. The two teams currently occupy the top spots in the Big 12 Conference.
