Cowgirls Downed by Sooners in Bedlam Opener
May 02, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 22 Oklahoma State softball team dropped the Bedlam opener on Wednesday, falling to No. 3 Oklahoma, 8-0, at Marita Hynes Field.
The loss drops the Cowgirls to 36-17 (12-4 Big 12) and ends the squad's hopes of earning their first conference title since 1995.
Wednesday's contest opened in familiar fashion for Oklahoma State, as Vanessa Shippy drew a seven-pitch walk out of the leadoff spot to give the Cowgirls an early runner. Shippy's walk extended her career-long streak to 46 consecutive games reaching base safely.
She has failed to reach base safely in only one game this season - a Feb. 16 clash against Florida Atlantic - but in that matchup Shippy still contributed, scoring the go-ahead run in extra innings that helped lift OSU to a 5-3 victory.
Shippy was OSU's only baserunner in the game, and the Sooners took advantage of the Cowgirls' offensive woes. OU plated four runs in the second inning to open the game's scoring and then tacked on four more in the fourth.
Samantha Clakley took the loss in the circle for OSU, allowing seven earned runs in four innings of work. Her record now stands at 15-8 for the year.
Oklahoma State will look to even up the series on Friday in Stillwater. First pitch at Cowgirl Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. and the team's senior day festivities will take place during
