April 25, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma State softball's Vanessa Shippy has been named one of the 25 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, it was announced Wednesday evening. She is one of five Big 12 athletes to be featured on the list that consists of the nation's elite.
Shippy is currently the Big 12 leader in batting average (.474), on-base percentage (.621), walks (48) and runs scored (61). She ranks among the top 10 nationally in all four of those categories.
Twice an All-American and Academic All-American, Shippy currently owns no fewer than eight school records. So far this season, she has surpassed her own OSU single-season runs record, set a new career walks record for the program and is on track to surpass several others.
Shippy is one of five players in Big 12 history to record at least 225 hits, 150 walks, 150 runs scored and 125 RBI. She is the only Cowgirl to ever reach those numbers and is the first Big 12 player to do so since Oklahoma's Lauren Chamberlain did in 2015.
The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native has twice been named national player of the week in 2018 and on three occasions she has earned Big 12 player of the week honors. She was recently selected 11th overall by the Cleveland Comets in the 2018 National Pro Fastpitch College Draft, making her the first Cowgirl to be drafted by the NPF during head coach Kenny Gajewski's tenure.
