STILLWATER – Oklahoma State captured its fourth consecutive Big 12 series win Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Kansas at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The Cowboys opened with a 12-1 run-rule victory in seven innings before holding off a late surge by the Jayhawks for a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
With the wins, the Cowboys are now in sole possession of first place in the conference standings with an 11-3 Big 12 mark, and they improved to 22-14-1 overall.
Christian Funk was the offensive hero for the Cowboys, going 5-for-8 with eight RBIs on the day; among his hits were two home runs and a double.
Carson Teel and Joe Lienhard picked up wins on the mound, with Teel recording a complete game in the opener. Peyton Battenfield worked the final 1 1/3 innings in game two for his second save of the season.
In the opener, Funk's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave OSU the win. The junior first baseman also had a grand slam in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the third.
Funk's seven RBIs marked the first time a Cowboy has reached that total in a game since Kevin David drove in seven runs against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 14, 2009.
Andrew Rosa and Carson McCusker each had two hits in the contest, with Rosa driving in a pair of runs, and Michael Neustifter delivered his second homer of the season.
Teel struck out six and scattered six hits in the seven-inning effort to improve to 5-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, OSU used a three-run rally with two outs in the sixth to emerge a winner.
With the game tied 1-1 and Cowboys on the corners, a balk plated the go-ahead run. Up next, Rosa ripped a single through the left side to bring home OSU's third run. Following a single and walk that loaded the bases, Jon Littell was hit by a pitch to push the Pokes' lead to 4-1.
Lienhard allowed just one run over the first seven innings, but the righty got into trouble in the eighth. KU led off the frame with three-straight singles before a walk made the score 4-2. The Jayhawks then pulled to within one on a sacrifice fly.
With Lienhard's night on the mound done, Brady Basso came out of the bullpen and retired the only batter he faced before Battenfield induced a ground ball to end the inning.
In the ninth, a one-out triple by James Cosentino put the tying run just 90 feet away, but Battenfield struck out KU's No. 3 and 4 hitters in the lineup, Jaxx Groshans and Brett Vosik, to end the game.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
