STILLWATER – Oklahoma State swept its third Big 12 series of the season Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as a seventh-inning rally lifted the Cowboys to a 4-3 win over Kansas to keep the Pokes in sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
With the win, OSU improved to 12-3 in conference play and 23-14-1 overall. The three Big 12 series sweeps is the most by the Cowboys since they had four during the 2016 season and is only the third time in six seasons under head coach Josh Holliday the Pokes have had three league series sweeps in a season (also 2014).
Trevor Boone's three-RBI double in the seventh capped a four-run rally by the Pokes to secure the comeback win. Jon Littell drove in OSU's first run in the inning, with each of the runs in the frame coming with two outs.
C.J. Varela picked up the win in relief of starter Jonathan Heasley to improve to 4-0 as he kept the Jayhawks off the scoreboard over the final three innings and struck out three.
Kansas (19-20, 3-11) started the game with three consecutive singles to take a 1-0 lead before Heasley got a strikeout and an inning-ending double play to escape further damage. The Jayhawks would add runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 advantage.
That lead held until the decisive seventh. The inning started with a walk to Ryan Cash and an Andrew Rosa single before KU reliever Zack Leban retired the next two Cowboy hitters. Littell then stepped to the plate and lined a ball up the middle to score Cash and put the Cowboys on the board.
After Christian Funk walked to load the bases, Boone sent a ball to the wall in right-center field to plate three runs and put the Cowboys up 4-3.
Working with a one-run lead, Varela retired the Jayhawks in order in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win.
Next up for the Cowboys is a trip down I-35 to face Dallas Baptist Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
