STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball's Maddi Holcomb was featured on SportsCenter's 'Top 10' last night, checking in at No. 2 for her defensive efforts in the Cowgirls' 5-1 sweep-clinching victory over Baylor on Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.
Holcomb, a senior, robbed Baylor's Shelby Friudenberg of a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, preserving Oklahoma State's 5-0 lead. The center fielder tracked the ball to the warning track, and credited her teammate - left fielder Chelsea Alexander - for her ability to go up and grab the ball above the wall.
"I knew it was hit hard, but the wind was doing some crazy stuff," Holcomb said. "I was kind of going back on it and didn't know if I really had a chance. Then I heard Chelsea counting down and I thought "I actually might have this" and that's why the timing was so perfect - because of her counting me down - so I'm thankful for her. I've always had a goal to rob a home run at OSU, so that's my number one catch that I've made."
Holcomb's home-run robbery is the latest in a long line of outstanding defensive plays that the North Richland Hills, Texas, native has made during her OSU career, but it is the first to be featured on ESPN's preeminent program.
Her defensive masterpiece came also came at key moment for OSU in Sunday's contest, as it kept the Lady Bears off the board and shifted momentum even further in the Cowgirls' favor during what was at that point a 5-0 game. Holcomb also helped the Cowgirls at the plate, going 1-for-3 on Sunday and 5-for-8 overall during the first three-game sweep of Baylor in Oklahoma State softball history.
Holcomb and the Cowgirls will return to action on Wednesday with a road trip to Wichita State before heading to Austin for a three-game set against the Texas Longhorns.
