Cowgirls Log 11 Hits in Loss to UT Arlington
April 10, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team racked up 11 hits in a 9-2 loss to Texas-Arlington on Tuesday at Cowgirl Stadium.
OSU (28-12; 7-2 Big 12) led the Mavericks 2-1 entering the sixth inning, but gave up eight runs - all of which were unearned - on four hits and three errors to drop the midweek matchup.
"This is as embarrassed as I've been here I think in my whole time here, to be very honest," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "This is a team that I don't expect that kind of play from. Credit UTA. They took advantage of everything that we did wrong and made it hurt. I'm just disappointed in the way some of our veteran kids played and some of the mistakes we made. We'll correct that, and like I told them, I hope it hurts and we can move forward from it. The great thing about our game is that we get to play tomorrow."
Despite the loss, Whitney Whitehorn had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-3 and drawing a walk out of the five-hole in the Cowgirls' lineup.
Taylor Lynch and Vanessa Shippy both also logged two hits of their own on Tuesday, with Lynch providing a solo home run in the first inning that gave OSU a 1-0 lead from the jump. Lynch's home run was her sixth of the season and the Cowgirls' 51st of the year, bringing the squad within two of tying the team's single-season home run record that was set in 2016 when Gajewski was a first-year head coach in Stillwater.
Samantha Clakley took the loss in the circle to fall to 11-5 after giving up four runs - only one of which was earned - in 5.1 innings of work. Clakley struck out three and walked just one on Tuesday. She has not walked more than two batters in 18 straight appearances.
Oklahoma State will look to quickly bounce back tomorrow when the Cowgirls travel east to face Missouri State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.
