Shippy Named JWOS Midseason Player of the Year
March 22, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball's Vanessa Shippy was one of four to be named in the Justin's World of Softball Midseason Awards, as she collected Midseason Player of the Year honors from the site.
Shippy, a USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year candidate, has twice been named the National Player of the Week so far this season. She received the honor from the NFCA, USA Softball and College Sports Madness after a dynamic display at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. College Sports Madness tabbed her as the player of the week again on March 13 after her impressive showing in the OSU Hall of Fame Classic.
The senior currently ranks among the nation's elite in several statistical categories, and she leads the Big 12 in batting average (.552), on-base percentage (.699), walks (30) and runs scored (40). All of those marks also rank in the top five nationally.
Shippy has reached base safely in 27 of Oklahoma State's 28 contests this season, and on the one occasion she didn't do so, she still managed to score the Cowgirls' go-ahead run in extra innings against Florida Atlantic. In 21 of her 28 games played, Shippy has logged at least one hit, and she had multiple hits on 10 of those occasions.
Earlier this season, Shippy became the fifth player in Big 12 history to record at least 225 hits, 150 walks, 150 runs scored and 150 runs batted in. She is the first player in the league to reach those numbers since Lauren Chamberlain (Oklahoma, 2012-15) and the first Cowgirl ever to do so.
The left-handed hitter also has begun to truly cement her place as one of the most successful player in OSU's illustrious history, as she currently owns no fewer than seven school records with more likely to be claimed in the coming weeks.
She is the program's all-time leader in on-base percentage (.529) and walks (150). Shippy also ranks second in runs scored, third in doubles, fourth in total bases and fifth in career hits.
Her start against Central Arkansas on March 14 marked the 200th of her career. She has started every possible game in her three-plus years as a Cowgirl, and with postseason play this year she will have a chance to match or pass Chelsea Garcia's school record of 231 consecutive games started.
Shippy and the Cowgirls (21-7) just crossed the halfway point of the regular season this week. They will now shift gears, however, as they prepare to open Big 12 play this weekend in Stillwater against Iowa State.
