Shippy a Candidate for 2018 Senior CLASS Award

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State senior Vanessa Shippy has been selected as a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball, it was announced today.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award seeks to recognize student-athletes who have shown notable achievement in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
A native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Shippy is one of 30 candidates for the award, which will be narrowed down to a list of 10 finalists midway through the regular season. From there, media, coaches and fans from across the nation will be allowed to select the one candidate who best exemplifies the four C's of the CLASS Award.
During her OSU career, Shippy has placed herself among the elite Cowgirls throughout the program's history.
She is the only Cowgirl to ever earn multiple All-America and Academic All-America honors, as she earned both those titles in each of the past two seasons. Shippy has also set or has a chance to set several school records as she enters her senior campaign.
The left-handed hitter currently owns the program's career on-base percentage record at .530, and is the only player in team history with an above-.500 on-base percentage in multiple seasons (.543 - 2016, .517 - 2017). She also ranks third in career batting average (.401) and second in slugging percentage (.597).
Last year, Shippy led Oklahoma State in several statistical categories, including batting average, hits, runs batted in, total bases and more. She also finished second among the Cowgirls in runs scored, walks, stolen bases and on-base percentage.
Shippy has also spent much of her free time serving within the Stillwater community and abroad.
She has collected and delivered clothing donations at the Stillwater Women's Shelter, read stories to classes at Sangre Ridge Elementary, cleaned and fed kittens at Tiny Paws Rescue Center, collected food, clothing and money, as well as put together Thanksgiving food boxes for families in need for the Salvation Army. Shippy has also spent time at local elementary schools and taken part in several Coaches vs. Cancer activities during her time at OSU.
This season, she has been named national player of the week twice and leads all Big 12 competitors in several statistical categories, including batting average (.563), on-base percentage (.710), walks (30) and runs scored (40).
The winner of the award will be announced and recognized during the 2018 Women's College World Series in June.
