Cowboy Wrestling Looks to Extend Big 12 Streak in Tulsa

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team takes aim for the program's sixth-straight Big 12 title and 52nd overall conference title this weekend as it travels to Tulsa to compete at the Big 12 Championships. Action is set for Saturday and Sunday at the BOK Center.

Tournament Schedule
The Big 12 Championship is divided into four sessions over two days of competition. Saturday's action will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday competition will begin at 8 a.m. A look at the full schedule:

Returning Big 12 Champs
Head coach John Smith returns three reigning Big 12 Champions in this year's lineup in Nick Piccininni (125), Dean Heil (141) and Preston Weigel (197). With championships each of the last three years, Heil will look to make history by becoming the ninth Cowboy wrestler to earn four career conference titles. Weigel is hunting his third career Big 12 Championship.

Cowboys at the Conference Meet
When Oklahoma State takes the mat for the Big 12 Championships, it will be hunting its 16th Big 12 tournament title in 21 attempts since the league held its first championship in 1997.

The Cowboys have won 51 team conference titles all-time (including the 2012 and 2013 regular season titles), claiming six Southwest Conference championships from 1917-25, four Missouri Valley Conference championships from 1925-28, 24 Big Eight Conference championships from 1958-96 and 16 Big 12 Conference championships from 1997-present.

Cowboy wrestlers have combined to win 277 conference individual titles through the years - one in the Southwest Conference, 23 in the Missouri Valley Conference, 151 in the Big Eight Conference and 99 in the Big 12.

John Smith at the Conference Meet
Coach John Smith has led the Cowboys to 19 conference championships and has coached 110 individual conference champs since taking over the program in 1991-92.

Under Smith, Oklahoma State has finished either first or second at the conference meet 21 times in 24 eligible years (Smith inherited an OSU program that was on probation at the time of his hiring and was not eligible to compete for the conference crown his first two seasons.)

He is a 13-time selection as Big 12 Coach of the Year to go with his two Big Eight Coach of the Year accolades.

Last Time Out
The fifth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up its dual schedule Sunday afternoon with a 41-0 shutout of Fresno State at the Save Mart Center. It marks the team's most lopsided win since its 41-0 sweep of Stanford in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Feb. 14, 2016.

The Cowboys (13-2, 8-0 Big 12) piled up seven bonus point wins in nine contested matches on Sunday, including a trio of falls from Kaid Brock, Dean Heil and Chandler Rogers, as well as a tech fall from Nick Piccininni and three major decisions.
