SAN MARCOS, Texas – Oklahoma State opened the 2018 season with a victory Friday night as the Cowboys knocked off Texas State, 6-2, at Bobcat Ballpark.

Colin Simpson led OSU with a 3-for-4, three-RBI night that included a two-run home run, while starter Jonathan Heasley worked six scoreless innings and tied a career high with six strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cowboys in season openers as they opened the year with a win for the first time since 2014.

After a pitcher's duel between Heasley and TXST starter Nicholas Fraze through the first five innings, the Cowboys broke the scoreless drought in the sixth.

Ryan Cash got things started with a one-out walk and promptly stole second. He scampered home to score on the play after a pair of throwing errors to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

The Cowboys added to their lead two batters later when Simpson followed a walk to Matt Kroon with a towering home run over the right-center field wall to put the Pokes up, 3-0.

OSU tallied two more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Bobcats, who had five errors in the game. Jake Taylor plated the first run before Cash brought home Cameron Dobbs with an RBI single that put the visitors up 5-0.

The Cowboys' final run came on an RBI single by Simpson in the eighth.

Heasley was strong in his sophomore debut as the right-hander allowed just four hits and did not allow a runner to reach second base as he picked up his third-career win.

Texas State scored its lone runs in the final two frames, getting an unearned run in the eighth inning off Joe Lienhard and picking up a run on a pair of hits against Carson Teel in the ninth.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 4 p.m.
