SAN MARCOS, Texas – Oklahoma State suffered a 10-1 loss to Texas State Saturday to even its season opening series at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Cowboys (1-1) committed five errors and managed just five hits in the loss, which sets up a rubber game for Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.
"We didn't play the way we need to defensively, we didn't locate the ball on the mound and at home plate we were just very passive," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "Never good to let a five-spot jump up early in the game, and our ballclub did not respond well in terms of answering that. It just became one of those games that got away from us…
"What you have to do as a coach is look at the process you used and say 'Where did we go wrong?' Look at your personnel and see who's confident and playing with some belief in themselves… It wasn't anything today that we ever want to see again, but for us as coaches it brings to light some things that we need to work on with our kids."
TXST right hander Connor Reich kept the Cowboys' offense in check, racking up eight strikeouts and allowing only two hits over seven shutout innings.
The Bobcats (1-1) knocked OSU starter Brady Basso out of the game early as the sophomore southpaw allowed six runs on four hits and three walks in just 1 2/3 innings. He left in the bottom of the second after allowing five runs in the frame with TXST leading 6-0.
Peyton Battenfield relieved Basso and posted a pair of career highs as he worked 3 1/3 innings and struck out five; he allowed three runs on five hits in the effort.
OSU's lone run came in its final at bat when Daniel DeSimone drew the Cowboys' only walk of the game with the bases loaded to collect his first-career RBI.
Colin Simpson picked up two of the Cowboys' five hits in the game; the junior catcher went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and is now 5-for-8 on the season.
Five Cowboys made their OSU debuts Saturday – DeSimone, Reza Aleaziz, Dylan Gardner, Max Hewitt and Cody Milligan – bringing the season total of Pokes making their first appearance in the orange and black to nine.
