Cowgirl Softball Jumps into Top 15
February 13, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball squad climbed up both national rankings this week, climbing six spots to No. 15 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 and five spots to No. 19 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
It is OSU's first time inside the top 15 of either national poll since checking in at No. 14 at the end of the 2010 season.
The Cowgirls (4-1) are coming off a highly-impressive showing at the Kajikawa Classic this past weekend. During the Arizona-based tournament, OSU defeated four opponents, including a win over No. 7/7 Arizona, 9-4, last Friday.
OSU's win over the Wildcats was its second win over a top-10 opponent during head coach Kenny Gajewski's tenure. The other was the squad's win over No. 1 Florida in Gainesville during the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Cowgirl offense was a focal point all weekend long as Oklahoma State logged 51 runs over five games in the desert. OSU smacked 12 home runs over the weekend, including four during a 21-5 run-rule victory over Western Michigan on Sunday.
Oklahoma State's 12 home runs are currently the third most by any school in the country, and the Cowgirls' 10.1 runs-per-game average ranks eighth in the nation.
OSU's 21 runs scored against Western Michigan tied the program record for runs scored in a single game. It was the third time that the Cowgirls have matched the record since the start of the 2017 season.
Along with downing top-10 Arizona and Western Michigan, the Cowgirls bested a tough Missouri squad, 6-3, and run ruled New Mexico, 13-1, during the Kajikawa Classic.
Head coach Kenny Gajewski and the Cowgirls will be back in action this week, as they head to Clearwater, Florida, to compete in the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational. Play begins Friday with OSU taking on No. 10 Tennessee and Florida Atlantic. The squad will also square off with Missouri again, South Florida and Oakland in the Sunshine State.
