Martinez Wins Third Consecutive Scholar Athlete Award
December 11, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
IRVING, Texas—Luis Martinez captured his third consecutive Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year award for the Oklahoma State men's cross country team, the conference announced Tuesday.
It is the fourth consecutive cross country season in which a Cowboy has taken home the award. The most recent three have been awarded to Martinez, and Craig Nowak won the award in 2015.
Martinez graduated with a degree in entrepreneurship and marketing. Currently, Martinez is attempting to earn a Master's in business analytics.
In November, Martinez earned his seventh First Team Academic All-Big 12 honor with four of those awards coming in the cross country season.
During the most recent cross country season, Martinez was a consistent scoring runner for the Cowboys. He finished every race he ran in OSU's top three.
At the Big 12 Cross Country Championships, he finished fourth overall and earned his seventh All-Big 12 honor. It was his fifth all-conference honor since the start of the 2017 cross country campaign.
Martinez finished 66th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and helped the Cowboys secure a 13th-place finish, which was a 16 spot improvement from 2017.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution and affiliate members nominate one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
