Cowgirls Escape With 62-60 Win In Opener

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team hung on down the stretch to win its season opener on Friday, escaping with a 62-60 win over Arkansas State in front of 2,576 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls led by as many as eight in the first half, holding a 23-15 lead with eight minutes to go in the second period. The Red Wolves used a 6-0 run to get within two before OSU would take a 28-23 advantage into the break.
Halfway through the third, the teams traded the lead six times before sophomore Braxtin Miller made a layup with a minute to go to send the Cowgirls into the final period with a 42-38 lead.
Miller hit a pair of 3-pointers to extend the OSU lead to 49-38. She connected from long range once again with five minutes to go to push the margin to 16 at 54-38. ASU used a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to get within seven.
With 19 seconds remaining, the Red Wolves knocked down a trey to get within one possession at 60-57 and cut the deficit to 1 with six seconds to go after a pair of free throws.
Sophomore Jaden Hobbs made a free throw with five seconds left to push the lead back to two.
The Red Wolves were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer.
Miller matched her career high with 23 points, while senior LaTashia Jones added 10 points and 21 boards. Her board total was one shy of matching the school record set by Toni Young in 2011.
