Game Notes
• The Cowboy basketball team got the ball rolling with an 80-59 exhibition win over Ouachita Baptist, and now Mike Boynton and Cowboys are ready to get the 2018-19 season officially started. The Cowboys are opening the season with a true road game for the first time since 1989. Charlotte is coached by first-year head coach Ron Sanchez, who helped turn the Virginia Cavaliers squads of late into national contenders. The 49ers will be led by Preseason All-Big 12 guard Jon Davis, who led Charlotte with 17.6 points per game last season.
• The matchup between the Cowboys and 49ers will air on ESPN+ at 3 p.m. Central. Bobby Rosinski and Jobey Thomas will handle the on-air duties. Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will be covering the Bedlam football game, so radio veteran Phil Brame and former Cowboy guard Bryndon Manzer will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
• This will be the 110th season of Cowboy basketball, and OSU is 85-24 (.779) in season-openers. In fact, OSU has won 23 straight season openers dating back to the 1994-95 season opener against BYU in the Great Alaska Shootout. This will be the first time OSU opens its season with a true road game since it took down North Texas, 94-66, in Denton, Texas on Nov. 28, 1989. In all, OSU is 9-11 (.450) when opening the season with a true road game.
• This will be just the second hardwood meeting between Oklahoma State and Charlotte. The two squads last met on Nov. 13, 2017, when the Cowboys used an early 21-2 run to jump out to a 30-8 lead and defeat the 49ers, 83-65, in Stillwater, Okla. Graduate transfer Kendall Smith led the way with 19 points - 17 in the first half alone - and Tavarius Shine added 17 points. Charlotte was led by Andrien White's 18 points and Jon Davis' 15 points and seven rebounds. The Cowboys got 41 points off the bench and held the 49ers to 34.6 percent shooting.
• Oklahoma State is 42-8 (84.0 percent) all-time against current members of C-USA. The Cowboys are 15-1 against North Texas and 8-2 against Rice, which are OSU's most frequent C-USA opponents. The Cowboys faced two C-USA members last season - Charlotte (W 83-65, Nov. 13, 2017) and Western Kentucky (L 92-84, March 21, 2018, NIT quarterfinals).
• A disciple of Virginia's Tony Bennett, Ron Sanchez became the 11th head coach in Charlotte basketball history on March 19, 2018. Sanchez served under Bennett for 12 seasons at both Washington State and Virginia, where he helped build the Cavaliers into a national power. During his time at Virginia, the Cavaliers won 212 games, three ACC regular-season titles and two ACC Tournament titles, while making six appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In fact, Virginia won 29 or more games in four of the past five seasons. Sanchez is a 1997 graduate of the State University of New York College at Oneonta where he starred on the basketball team.
