November 27, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State softball pitcher Melanie Roche was again recognized for her international success, as she was announced as the newest member of the New South Wales Hall of Champions. Roche's honor comes after being inducted into the International Softball Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Roche was named a first-team All-American twice in her career as a Cowgirl, doing so in 1992 and 1993. She was also a member of two Women's College World Series teams - the 1990 team which finished third and the 1993 squad which finished fourth. Roche made the WCWS all-tournament team in 1993.
During her time in Stillwater, Roche was also a first-team All-Big Eight selection three times and earned Academic All-Big Eight honors in 1991.
Roche holds several Cowgirl records, including career shutouts (47), consecutive scoreless innings pitched (60.2), season victories (32) and the fewest walks per game (1.12). She threw four no-hitters, including a perfect game against Kent State in 1991, during her OSU career.
After leaving Oklahoma State, Roche went on to play for the Australian National Team. She played in the Olympics four times for her country, appearing the the 1996 Atlanta games, the 2000 Sydney games, the 2004 Athens games and the 2008 Beijing games.
Roche captured a medal on each occasion, helping Australia earn the bronze medal three times (1996, 2000 and 2008) and the silver medal in 2004. She is one of only four Australian sports people in history to win a medal at four consecutive Olympic Games.
In total, she earned 229 caps with the Australian women's national team over her 20-year career as an international player. Roche was inducted into the Oklahoma State Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Softball Australia Hall of Fame in 2012.
