Coach Gajewski Quotes on each signee
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball coach Kenny Gajewski fortified the future of Cowgirl softball Wednesday with the signing of six in OSU's 2019 recruiting class.
The class, made up of Macee Barnes, Mattie Boyd, Jules Callaham, Maci Cunconan, Madison Neighbors and Karli Petty, has previously been touted as the nation's No. 8 recruiting class according to FloSoftball. The top-10 ranking comes just a year after nabbing the No. 7 spot in Flo's rankings last year.
"This class has a ton of speed, it has some power, its got a power arm and its got some unique depth - kids that can play multiple positions, and play them well at a high level," Gajewski said. "We're excited to get these kids here and they've been waiting to come for a long time, and it's exciting to finally welcome them to our family."
Three of Oklahoma State's signees - Boyd, Cunconan and Neighbors are ranked in Extra Inning Softball's Extra Elite 100. Cunconan tops the group as the nation's No. 66 player, followed by Neighbors at No. 78 and Boyd at No. 88.
Boyd and Cunconan make up the two pitchers in this year's group, with the 6-foot-2 Boyd being the power arm Gajewski previously referred to. Cunconan's skills as a pitcher will be put to the test in Stillwater, but the Cowgirls' head coach said he foresees her talent being more suited as a left-handed first baseman that can also run well.
The third of the top-100 trio, Madison Neighbors, is a powerful catcher, both with her bat at the plate and her arm behind it. Neighbors also possesses speed in her array of talents, and will challenges the Cowgirls' opposition at times on the basepaths.
Karli Petty, a talented infielder, narrowly missed out on a top-100 ranking, but slots in at No. 101 in Extra Inning Softball's national recruiting rankings. Macee Barnes, a speedster from Grove, Oklahoma, joins Petty as infielders in the 2019 signing class.
Jules Callaham, a product of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, rounds out the group. Callaham brings plenty of versatility to the table for OSU, as she will likely see time in the outfield and behind the plate when she arrives in Stillwater.
"We're really excited about this group because this is a group that really becomes the first completely recruited class for us as coaches here," Gajewski said. "It's kind of a unique deal. Even though we've had some other great groups, this will be kind of the first group that will have been completely recruited by this coaching staff. We're excited to get them here."
All six of this year's signees come from the high school ranks, and four of them are Oklahoma natives. The two non-Oklahomans - Boyd and Cunconan - hail from Wylie, Texas, and Warrensburg, Missouri, respectively.
Recruiting local talent has been a point of emphasis for the Oklahoma State staff throughout Gajewski's tenure. Nineteen of the 23 members on Gajewski's current roster are from Oklahoma or a state that shares a border with Oklahoma.
All six of Wednesday's signees will join the Oklahoma State family next fall.
