Tracking the Trends: OSU vs. Texas
October 26, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football hosts Texas for America's Greatest Homecoming Saturday in a primetime ABC matchup at 7 p.m. A look at some of the streaks and trends heading into the game:
Talking Points vs. Texas – Offense
• Doak Walker Award candidate Justice Hill is widely considered as one of the best running backs in college football. He recently set a Big 12 running back record at 12 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown and has 17 career games with at least 100 rushing yards. His 3,293 career rush yards ranks fifth among active players and first among Power Five non-seniors, and his 99.8 career rushing yards per game average ranks fourth among all active FBS players.
• The last time OSU faced a top 10 opponent, Hill had the best outing of his career to date. Against No. 8 Oklahoma last year, Hill rushed 30 times for 228 yards and two touchdowns.
• Through seven games as OSU's starter, quarterback Taylor Cornelius has passed for 2,014 passing yards to rank No. 12 in FBS this season. Many of them have come via chunk plays, as his 36 completions of at least 20 yards and 15.03 yards per completion average both rank No. 7 nationally. He's also among the top 10 in the country when it comes to points responsible for per game (17.1) and total offense per game (314.9).
• Sophomore receiver Tylan Wallace leads the team and ranks No. 8 in the FBS with 102.6 receiving yards per game this season. His 40 catches are twice as many as any other receiver, and he has 718 yards on the season to rank second in the Big 12. He is just the second underclassman in school history to record four straight 100-yard receiving games. He put up 116 yards against Kansas, 123 against Texas Tech, 105 against Boise State and had a career-best 166 yards against South Alabama in week two.
• Receiver Tyron Johnson is the second-leading receiver in yards, catches and touchdowns. He's one of OSU's biggest deep threats, averaging 20 yards per catch to rank No. 2 in the Big 12. 40 percent of Johnson's catches this season have gained at least 20 yards, and 15 percent of his catches result in a Cowboy touchdown.
Talking Points vs. Texas – Defense
• The most impressive aspect of the Cowboy defense this season is its ability to get to the quarterback. Through seven games, OSU has totaled 30 sacks to lead the nation. That's three more than second place UAB. OSU also has the national lead when it comes to average sacks per game at 4.67 per contest, while the next-best sits at 4.29 per game.
• Defensive end Jordan Brailford has led the charge, as his 1.14 sacks per game ranks seventh nationally and leads the Big 12. He also leads the Big 12 and ranks ninth in FBS with 1.8 TFL per game. Jarrell Owens has added 4.0 sacks of his own and Mike Scott has 3.0 sacks on the year.
• The Cowboys also rank No. 9 in FBS with 1.8 team tackles for loss per game. While sacks contribute to the tackles for loss totals, the OSU defense has an additional 30 tackles for loss outside of those sacks.
• Another positive area has been red zone defense. When opponents have reached the red zone this season, they have only scored 73.9 percent of the time - enough for the OSU defense to lead the Big 12 in that category.
• OSU also has yet to allow a point to an opponent on its opening drive of a game this season.
