Cowgirls Wrap Up Unbeaten Fall Season
October 24, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team completed a perfect fall season Wednesday with a 12-2 victory over Butler Community College at Cowgirl Stadium.
OSU posted a 6-0 record and outscored its opponents 92-16 during its fall slate.
"For it being cold and wet, and not knowing if we were going to play or not, I thought we played well enough," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It's just good to see these kids continue to learn and continue to grow. Our fall is wrapped up games-wise, but we'll intersquad tomorrow and hopefully finish the team portion of fall strong there."
The Cowgirls, as they've done most of the fall, got off to a blazing start by scoring six first-inning run.
Sophomore Sydney Pennington provided the bulk of that tally as she blasted a first-pitch grand slam over the center-field wall, giving OSU an early 4-0 lead. Pennington finished the fall with four home runs and 11 RBI - the most of any Cowgirl.
OSU tacked on two more first-inning runs after Pennington's grand slam, and then scored five more over the next three innings to burst out to an 11-2 lead.
The Oklahoma State pitching staff held Butler's offense in check throughout, with Samantha Show, Gabby Sprang and Kelly Maxwell splitting duties in the circle.
Show, Wednesday's starter, struck out seven batters in four innings of work and allowed only two hits. The Texas A&M transfer was dominant over her final nine innings of work in the circle this fall, striking out 20 batters in that time.
Sprang and Maxwell followed with the final six innings of Wednesday's game being split between the pair. Both notched four strikeouts, did not allow a hit and walked only one in their relief efforts.
"My excitement for the spring has been high since day one, and I've been pretty open about that," Gajewski said. "It's fun to be like that. There may be some people who think I should back off on how I think about this team, but there's no reason for us to do that. We're much improved and we're super talented, and we still have a lot to prove and a lot to earn, but it's OK to put some expectations on these kids and what we're capable of."
