STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's upset bid against No. 16 West Virginia fell short Friday night as the Mountaineers escaped Neal Patterson Stadium with a 2-1 win.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Cowgirls as they dropped to 10-5-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in Big 12 Conference play.
WVU (10-3-3, 6-1-0) owned a sizable advantage in shots in the match, and the Mountaineers' final attempt proved to be the difference as Hannah Abraham headed a cross from Nadya Gill to the near post at the 86:33 mark to lift the visitors to the win.
Abraham's score nput WVU on top in a game that had been tied since the opening half on a pair of penalty kick goals.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute when Bianca St. Georges stepped up and delivered her PK opportunity into the net to make the score 1-0.
That lead held until the 41:30 mark. After Kim Rodriguez delivered a short corner kick to Jaci Jones in the box, a WVU defender barreled over Jones, and OSU was awarded a penalty kick. Rodriguez stepped up to take the opportunity for the third time this season and buried the attempt once again to tie things at 1-1.
Once again playing without its top two goal scorers, Haley Woodard and Marlo Zoller – a duo that has combined for 12 goals on the season – OSU was limited to just three shots in the match.
But the Cowgirls' defense rose to the occasion, with goalies Dani Greenlee and Hannah Warner each posting three saves and defender Elise Hawn making a highlight-reel play in the 50th minute when she chased down a shot by St. Georges and headed the ball off the line to keep the score tied.
OSU returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Cowgirls host Iowa State on Senior Day at Neal Patterson Stadium. Following the match, seniors Megan Royall, Rachel VanFossen, Woodard and Zoller will be honored.
