Cowgirls Sweep First Round of Singles Play

IOWA CITY, Iowa–All four Cowgirl tennis players won their first matches at the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday.
No. 1 seeded Lisa Marie Rioux started things off for the Cowgirls with a 6-1. 6-0 victory over Minnesota's Gomez. She is set to take on Kansas' Julia Deming in the round of 32.
Teammate Marina Guinart followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Alina Munteanu of Southern Illinois Edwardsville and plays Iowa State's Maty Cancini tomorrow.
Sofi Blanco took on Missouri's Lisa Fukutoku and picked up the Cowgirls third win of the day, 6-3, 7-5, and freshman Catherine Gulihur bested St. Louis senior Ally McKenzie, 6-2, 6-0.
Blanco will play Kansas' Malkia Ngounoue, and Gulihur takes on the Jayhawks' Maria Toran Ribes.
The Cowgirls began the day with doubles play where Blanco and Rioux took an 8-5 win over Tulsa's Manon Meulenberg and Shura Poppe. Guinart and Gulihur were less fortunate and landed on the wrong side of an 8-6 match with Arkansas' Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice.
The win puts Blanco and Rioux in the round of 16 tomorrow, facing Oklahoma's Kianah Motosono and Laura Rico-Garcia. Play resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with doubles.
