Cowgirls Head to ITA Regional Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa–Four Cowgirl tennis players are back on the court this weekend at the ITA Central Region Championships in Iowa City. Marina Guinart, Sofia Blanco, Lisa Marie Rioux and Catherine Gulihur will each compete in singles with Blanco and Rioux and Guinart and Gulihur pairing up for doubles.
All four women received first-round byes in singles play, with Rioux getting the No. 1 overall seed. Blanco and Rioux also received the No. 1 spot in doubles play.
The Cowgirls are coming off a successful trip to California at the ITA All-American Championships and look to build on their early fall season success in Iowa.
"Regionals has become somewhat of a tradition for us," Blanco said. "I think it's like five years that someone has won it. It's a big deal for us, and we all go there with mindset to win it. It's a tournament where the mentally tough people win."
Last fall, the Cowgirls swept the event hosted in Lawrence, Kan., when Blanco and Vladica Babic brought home a doubles championship. Babic also claimed the 2017 singles crown, becoming the second Cowgirl in program history to win both titles at the event in the same year.
The University of Iowa is playing host to the tournament, and winners at the event move on to compete at the Oracle Fall National Championships in early November to close out the fall season.
Blanco and Rioux get things started tomorrow for the Cowgirls when they face Bradley's Bozana Lojpur and Malini Wijesinghe in the first round. Singles play for OSU begins on Saturday.
