Early Offense Catapults Cowgirls Past Connors State
October 11, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team earned its third consecutive win to open the fall season Thursday, as the Cowgirls bested Connors State, 28-0, in a 10-inning outing at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls have outscored their three opponents this fall by a 53-8 scoreline.
"It was a good game for us because we got everyone in and got a ton of at-bats," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought we also pitched well. When you pitch the way that we just did and put the ball in play with no errors - that's a recipe to win a lot of games. I just credit our kids for taking care of what they need to. We haven't been on the field in two days, so this was good to get back out there and good to see them perform."
OSU's offense was electric from the start Thursday, tallying 11 runs in a wild first inning that never saw a third out recorded. Twelve of the first 13 Oklahoma State batters reached base in the game's opening frame, with Samantha Show's two-RBI double to the gap in left center igniting the offensive outpour.
Show also recorded a sacrifice fly that was caught at the wall in center field to record her third RBI of the first inning. She finished Thursday with a 2-for-3 line at the plate, including one run and the three RBI. The Texas A&M transfer has starred for OSU this fall, batting .556 with two home runs and a team-high seven RBI.
She also pitched three scoreless innings on Thursday, striking out seven of the nine batters she faced.
OSU also got significant production from returning senior Rylee Bayless, who went 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Behind Bayless, Mady Lohman went 3-for-5 with four RBI in the two-hole, Michaela Richbourg notched two hits and two RBI, and Chelsea Alexander went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
In the circle, Logan Simunek started for the Pokes and hurled two scoreless innings. Kelly Maxwell followed with four strikeouts in three shutout innings of work, while Show and Samantha Clakley handled clean-up duties over the final five innings.
The Oklahoma State pitching staff has a combined 1.40 ERA in 30 innings of work this fall.
"Whenever you don't give up any runs, you will never lose - I'm a genius there," Gajewski said. "We walked one kid. On the flip side, we had 16 walks and no strikeouts. When you can do that, you're going to win a lot of games."
Oklahoma State will continue its fall season next Wednesday, Oct. 17, when the Cowgirls welcome North Texas to Stillwater. First pitch at Cowgirl Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
