Cowgirl Tennis Selected Third in Big 12 Preseason Poll
January 05, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team was picked third in the Big 12 preseason coaches poll released by the conference on Friday.
The Cowgirls received 60 points to land in the top three of the poll behind Texas Tech in first and Texas in second with 79 and 72 points, respectively. TCU (55) and Baylor (54) round out the top five.
OSU is coming off its second consecutive Big 12 regular season title in 2017, as the Cowgirls ran off an 8-1 conference record to share the championship with Texas Tech. The Pokes went 25-6 overall on the year and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second-straight season before falling to eventual the national champion Florida Gators.
Head coach Chris Young returns a handful of starters from last season's run, most notably senior Vladica Babic, who is coming off an impressive fall campaign that saw the Montenegro native sweep the ITA Central Region Championships. Also returning is Babic's co-regional doubles champion teammate Sofia Blanco and redshirt junior Katarina Stresnakova. East Tennessee State transfer Marina Guinart also figures to make an impact on the Cowgirl lineup this season after arriving in Stillwater this summer.
The Cowgirls will open the 2018 season ranked No. 16 in the country by the ITA. The preseason poll released earlier this week features five Big 12 teams in the top 25.
OSU will serve up the 2018 season next week in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Freeman Memorial Tournament. Following that event, the Cowgirls will return home for a string of six home matches beginning with a doubleheader against Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian on Saturday, Jan. 20.
