Cowgirls Blank Wyoming in Second-Straight Sweep
January 22, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team picked up its second consecutive sweep Monday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center, shutting out Wyoming, 4-0.
Â
The Cowgirls (3-0) opened the night by taking doubles for the third-straight match with wins on courts two and three. Megan McCray and Shir Hornung picked up the first win of the evening with a 6-4 victory over Myiah Scott and Ana Tkachenko at No. 3 for their second win of the season. Katarina Stresnakova and Marina Guinart tallied their first dual win of 2018, taking down Magdalena Stecel and Milka Genkova, 6-4, to clinch the point.
Â
The teams played out the remainder of doubles, as Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco were trailing Tessa van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik, 6-5. Babic and Blanco were able to tie it at six to force a tiebreaker, but the Wyoming tandem pulled away late in the tiebreak to take the match, 7-6(7).
Â
"I thought Wyoming came out and played great in doubles," head coach Chris Young said. "They were very aggressive and gave us a good test. I was disappointed in the way we managed those matches, but I was really impressed with how we came out in singles afterwards. In doubles, I thought we took too many risks and didn't put ourselves in the right spots, and then in singles we did the opposite. We came out and we managed our matches better."
Â
OSU was able to bounce back quickly in singles, as they ran off three quick, straight-set wins to put Wyoming away.
Â
Freshman Shir Hornung snagged the first win of her Cowgirl career to open up singles play. Hornung was dominant, shutting out Wyoming's Myiah Scott, 6-0, 6-0, on court six to put the Cowgirls up, 2-0.
Â
"For Shir it's just a matter of getting match tough," Young said. "She came in as a freshman and hadn't played a match in a couple of years, so for her getting the flow of matches and getting a couple matches this weekend was good for her. You saw she was a lot more relaxed today, and that's only going to get better as time goes on."
Â
Katarina Stresnakova followed up Hornung's win with her third singles triumph of the weekend. As she did in her previous two matches of the dual season, Stresnakova dominated and turned in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ana Tkachenko on court three to put OSU just a point away.
Â
Playing in the top singles position, Babic responded from her tough loss in doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 tally over Wyoming's Magdalena Stencel to clinch the match for the Pokes. The win was her second of the weekend in singles.
Â
The Cowgirls will face their toughest test yet this season when they host the ITA Kickoff Weekend, beginning Friday with a bout against No. 24 Arizona State at 4 p.m. If victorious, OSU will then face the winner of the TCU-Ole Miss matchup Saturday at 3 p.m. for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
