January 13, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis tandem of Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco will compete in the Freeman Memorial Tennis Classic semifinals Sunday.
Babic and Blanco picked up a nice win Saturday in the doubles quarterfinals, overpowering No. 41 Melissa Lord and Caroline Lampl of Stanford, 6-1, to advance to the semis. The 20th-ranked Cowgirl tandem will match up with No. 18 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham of North Carolina on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT for a spot in the finals. If victorious, Babic and Blanco will compete for the tournament doubles title shortly after.
The duo will be playing for their second individual tournament championship of the season on Sunday, as they combined to take the ITA Central Region doubles title in October to highlight a successful fall season in which they rattled off eight wins. They would be the first OSU doubles team to win at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Classic and the 14th overall doubles team to claim the title.
After taking a 3-2 lead on No. 7 Jada Hard and Ena Shibahara of UCLA in the early going, Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova came up just short of a semifinal berth of their own, dropping the match, 7-5. The pair were coming off a 6-1 win over UNLV's Izumi Asano and Juliet Zhang on Friday in the round of 16.
Heading into afternoon singles action, Babic aimed to tally her second quarterfinal triumph of the day as she was matched up with No. 46 Abi Altick of UCLA. Babic claimed the first set, 2-6, but came up short, 6-3, 6-3, in the final two frames to drop the match.
Katarina Stresnakova snagged a straight-set win in the consolation backdraw, dropping Stanford's Kimberly Yee, 6-3, 6-3, for her second win of the weekend.
Sofia Blanco also picked up a win in consolation action. Drawing UNLV's En-Pai Huang, the Cowgirl junior came away with the three-set victory for her second of the tournament as well.
