STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team opened its fall season Thursday with an 11-5 win over Butler at Cowgirl Stadium.
"We needed that type of game," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We hadn't been on the field since Sunday. It wasn't the cleanest game and I didn't expect it to be. Our pitchers did some great things, but they also did some ugly things. I love this team though. I feel really good about this team."
Madi Sue Montgomery led the way offensively for the Cowgirls (1-0), as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI on Thursday. Her biggest moment came in the fourth inning when she sent a ball into the right-center field gap, scoring both Vanessa Shippy and Maddi Holcomb.
Montgomery's two-out, two-RBI double broke open the game for OSU and pushed the Cowgirls' lead out to 6-0.
"I was really excited to get back out there," Montgomery said. "Obviously, I had to sit out last fall, so it was fun to get back out there and play with my friends. We have a lot of new girls and they are all really good. They're creating a lot of competition for us and it's a lot of fun out here."
Along with Montgomery, Holcomb was another familiar face involved with the Cowgirls' offensive success against Butler. The North Richland HIlls, Texas, native tallied two hits and scored twice, including on Montgomery's two-out double. Holcomb also recorded her first stolen base of the fall Thursday.
She has found plenty of success on the basepaths so far during her OSU career, swiping 28 bases during her first three seasons on the field.
Senior transfer Emmie Robertson also took care of business on the mound for Oklahoma State Thursday, pitching four shutout innings and earning her first win of the fall. Robertson struck out four Grizzly batters and surrendered just two hits during her OSU debut.
"I feel really good about the makeup of this team and the camaraderie that they have," Gajewski said. "It's just a matter of us getting onto the field and playing more games. I like the way we practice and the way they come to the field every day to prepare, so we're just going to keep plugging away."
Oklahoma State tallied 15 hits against Butler, with four Cowgirls (Montgomery, Holcomb, Brooke Johnson and Whitney Whitehorn) all recording two-hit games.
Next up for the Cowgirls is a clash with Connors State next Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Cowgirl Stadium. First pitch is currently scheduled for 6 p.m.
