Carmichael & Ongaro postgame
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Oklahoma State earned a 2-2 draw against 12th-ranked Texas A&M Friday night at Ellis Field as the No. 19 Cowgirls remained undefeated on the season.
Â
In front of 4,614 fans, OSU got a late goal from Haley Woodard and eight saves by Michela Ongaro to move to 4-0-1 on the season. The Cowgirls entered the game 0-7-1 all time in College Station.
Â
TAMU (2-0-1) controlled the attack throughout much of the first half, but it was the Cowgirls who took the first lead in the match. In the 18th minute, Marlo Zoller went endline and delivered a cross into the box intended for Jaci Jones. However, the Aggies' Jimena Lopez sent the ball into her own net trying to break up the play, and OSU took a 1-0 advantage.
Â
OSU's lead did not last long as with 24:30 left in the opening half, Grace Piper sent a Cienna Arrieta cross into the box past Ongaro to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
The match remained tied 1-1 at the break thanks in part to Ongaro, who faced 12 shots by the Aggies in the opening 45 minutes and recorded five saves.
Â
Ongaro continued her strong play in the second half, and a highlight-reel save by the senior kept TAMU from taking the lead in the 65th minute as she dove to her right to knock away a 20-yard blast by Mikaela Harvey.
Â
Next it was OSU's turn at just missing out on the go-ahead score when in the 74th minute Camy Huddleston crushed a shot from 22 yards that deflected off the top of the crossbar.
Â
The tie would finally be snapped with just 7:20 remaining in regulation when TAMU's Stephanie Malherbe dribbled into the box past a pair of Cowgirl defenders and sent a shot to the far post to put the Aggies on top, 2-1.
Â
The Cowgirls weren't down long, however, as Anna Beffer and Haley Woodard hooked up for the equalizer with 4:09 left in regulation. The duo executed on a give-and-go as Woodard collected the second pass from Beffer and chipped in a shot from eight-yards out. The goal was Woodard's first of the season in her first game action of the year, while Beffer notched her fourth assist.
Â
The golden goal remained elusive throughout the two overtime periods, with OSU recording the only two shots in the first extra period and TAMU collecting five shots in the final 10 minutes.
Â
The Aggies finished with a 28-9 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge on corner kicks.
Â
OSU concludes its weekend road trip Sunday in San Antonio with a 1 p.m. match against UTSA.
