What the Media Are Saying: Aug. 6
August 06, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team took part in its annual fan appreciation and media day this past Saturday, as the Cowboys signed autographs for fans and then took part in a series of interviews with a variety of news outlets.
Oklahoma State has received plenty of praise heading into this season, so much so that several local and national media outlets have stated that the 2017 season could be one of the Cowboys' successful during the Mike Gundy era.
In recapping all of Saturday's events, The Oklahoman's John Helsley and Scott Wright noted how the Cowboys are entering this year with an unmatched confidence. They also discussed how the team's success is helped by its most notable performers, such as Mason Rudolph and James Washington, not allowing their egos to become over-inflated.
Speaking of Washington, The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson wrote an in-depth piece about how the Stamford, Texas native became one of the most prolific receivers in Oklahoma State history.
One of the other stories of discussion to come out of Saturday's festivities was the Tulsa World's Bill Haisten's article on how critical the offensive line will be to the Cowboys' success this season.
Haisten's colleague at the Tulsa World, Mark Cooper, followed the same route as Carlson Saturday, as he told readers the story of junior quarterback Taylor Cornelius' journey to Oklahoma State. Cooper wrote how during the 2014 season, Cornelius, a walk-on at the time, was nearly thrust into the starting spot after starter Daxx Garman suffered an injury.
"Three years later, it's hard to remember that for one night, Cornelius was one play away from being Oklahoma State's quarterback," Cooper wrote. "When OSU kicks off against Tulsa on Aug. 31, could once again be one play away from being Oklahoma State's quarterback."
Coming off another 10-win season and a victory in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the Cowboys are entering the 2017 season with plenty of momentum. Last week, the momentum continued to build as OSU debuted at No. 11 in the Preseason Amway Coaches Poll.
Oklahoma State will open its season against in-state foe Tulsa on Thursday, August 31. Kick off is currently scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium.
