Getting to Know...Sarah Miller
August 17, 2017 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Sarah Miller transferred to Oklahoma State because she was looking for a team that was right for her. She found out the Cowgirl program was everything she was looking for and more. In her first season in Stillwater as a redshirt freshman, she notched a pair of wins and an MOP honor against South Dakota State.
From Boulder, Colorado, Miller was a multiple finalist at the AQHYA World Show. She was also named Top Ten in the Nation in Horsemanship and Showmanship in 2014
What made you want to come to OSU?
I came to OSU as a transfer and had to switch conferences to not lose a year of eligibility. My best friend, Taylor Hickam, rides for the team and told me about the down-to-earth atmosphere of the team. I knew I wanted a team that would display quality sportsmanship along with having talented riders. OSU was this team.
What is your favorite OSU tradition? Why?
I like the traditions surrounding Homecoming. The entire weekend is filled with fun events that revolve around the town and school. It amazes me the amount of detail in the Greek Life tissue paper art.
What is your favorite competition moment? Why?
My favorite part of competition is getting horses ready at home meets. Everyone is running around trying to get stuff done and helping each other. It makes you realize that it does take an entire team to win and this reminder makes you want to compete that much better. Don't get me wrong I love the challenge of collegiate showing especially at away meets, but seeing your blessings is incredible.
Do you have any pre-match rituals?
Before I go into the arena to compete, I say a prayer and pat my horse on its shoulder. My older brother's best friend's momma died a few years ago, and he's basically a third brother to me. I say a prayer to her and ask her to help me ride to my best ability. I do this in my 45 second warm-up before I go in.
What is your favorite event to compete in? Why?
I love showing the horsemanship. You have to make everything look easy even though you are working to keep your horse collected and accomplish the maneuvers. It's all about presentation.
What's something interesting about yourself that not that many people know?
I was on the cover of Right Start magazine when I was a baby.
Did you play any other sports in high school?
I played soccer all four years, and I also played ice hockey for a summer in high school.
What is your proudest sports moment?
My proudest sports moment was becoming All-State First Team for soccer my junior year of high school.
What are your favorite professional sports teams?
My favorite professional sports team is the Anaheim Ducks (NHL). I grew up around hockey and decided the Mighty Ducks were my team (we were called the Mighty Ducks when I was younger).
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
I want to help this team accomplish a conference championship and a national championship while being a good teammate along the way. My goal is to be there for my teammates in and out of the arena.
