Getting to Know...Danielle Cohen
July 20, 2017 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Danielle Cohen didn't see herself going to school in Oklahoma, but as soon as she visited the campus, she fell in love with Oklahoma State. Cohen had a successful riding career before her time at OSU, and she has continued that success since her first season.
Cohen has posted a couple of seven-win seasons and she went 2-0 at the Big 12 Championships last year. She was given an honorable mention on the NCEA All-America list for Reining and a spot on the All-Big 12 team for Reining. She earned an MOP honor against TCU and was named to the honorable mention list for NCEA All-Academic honors.
What made you want to come to OSU?
The same reason everyone chooses Oklahoma, to try and find a real cowboy. But honestly though, living in Oklahoma didn't sound like the most ideal place to choose. As soon as I visited OSU, I fell in love with the coaching staff, the girls on the team and most of all, the campus.
What is your favorite OSU tradition? Why?
Homecoming is probably my favorite tradition. Stillwater seems like such a small town until homecoming week when fans and alumni come from everywhere to celebrate. Also, it's typically the same week as my birthday so that's just more reason to love it.
What is your favorite competition moment? Why?
Winning the Big 12's my sophomore year was pretty amazing. There's no feeling like holding up that trophy with 40 of your best friends, especially since we got to do it in Stillwater.
What is your pre-meet ritual?
If I had one pre-meet ritual it would probably be every time before I show, my roommate (Ebba Lange) comes up to me to say something about me or my horse I drew that day. It just gives me the boost of confidence I need before I go in. Being honest, I panic a little bit when she forgets because it makes me feel like she watched my warmup and is not too confident in what's about to happen.
What is your favorite event to compete in? Why?
Reining because it is challenging and fast paced.
What's something interesting about yourself that not many people know?
I'm deathly afraid of heights. It doesn't matter how many times I watch someone go down a zip line or up a high rope before me. I physically can't make myself do it.
Did you play any other sports in high school?
No, Riding took up most of my time in high school.
What is your proudest sports moment?
Winning the youth world championship in 2011 is probably my proudest moment. In our sport, we win 100 times more than we lose, so I would say that's probably my one and only claim to fame.
What are your favorite professional sports teams?
Honestly, I'm not a huge professional sports fan, but growing up in South Florida practically made you a Miami Heat fan.
What are your goals for next year?
To enjoy every bit of it and be the best teammate I can be. To try and leave behind a legacy and set a good example for the girls who will have to take over when me and my fellow seniors are gone. I'm amazed at how fast these past three years have gone by. I have made my greatest friends and best memories over the past years on the team, and I can't imagine what I'm going to do when it's all over. So this year I want to get everything out of it that I can. Also, to win a conference and national championship ring. I think the seniors deserve to go out on that note.
