Jelley Captures Third State Am Title In Four Years
July 19, 2017 | Cowboy Golf
TULSA, Okla. – For the third time in four years, Oklahoma State rising senior Brendon Jelley is the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Champion.
Jelley, who also hoisted the trophy in 2014 and 2015, knocked off Cody Burrows, 4 and 3, on Wednesday at Southern Hills Country Club.
The Tulsa, Okla., native never trailed in the final match, taking his first lead at the second. The duo halved the next three holes before Jelley took command by winning the next four holes to hold a 5-up lead at the turn.
He maintained his lead through 13 holes before Burrows won the 14th to get within four with four to play. However, Jelley closed out the match with a par at the 15th to become the first player to win the event three times in four years since Glen Fowler, who won three times in succession from 1958-60.
Jelley's road to the title included a 21-hole victory in the opening round over teammate Tyson Reeder, an 8-and-6 win over Declan Kenny, a 2-up win over Rhett Bechtel, a 3-and-2 triumph over Christopher Noel, and a 4-and-3 semifinal victory over Bryce Newell.
The victory continued an impressive stretch that saw him claim medalist honors at last week's U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier at Karsten Creek with a pair of 69s.
